Erotica is the fifth studio album by American singer Madonna, released on October 20, 1992 by Maverick and Sire Records. Erotica is a concept album about sex and romance, including her alter ego, lover Dita, inspired by actress Dita Parlo. Some of his songs also take on a more confessional tone, influenced by the loss of two close friends of Madonna due to AIDS. Erotica received generally positive reviews from critics, who considered it one of Madonna's most adventurous albums and praised her comments about taboos and AIDS. Commercially, the album was less successful than Madonna's previous albums, peaking at number 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart, becoming her first studio album not topping the chart since her debut. It was released in 1972, after Joplin's death, as a double album. The first record contains performances with Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the second with the Full Tilt Boogie Band, recorded in different locations in 1968 and 1970. There are no live recordings from her first solo work with the Kozmic Blues band on the album, although the songs produced with this group were performed in Full Tilt Boogie Band recordings. The photographs used for the gatefold album were taken by photographer David Gar in New York in 1969 and 1970. The album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 in the US. ...more
