It was originally written as the soundtrack to the film "The Last Temptation of Christ" , but Gabriel spent several months after the release of the film, developing the music, finally releasing it as a full album instead of a soundtrack. It is considered a milestone in the popularization of world music and received a Grammy award for best New Age album in 1990.
