Released in September 1970, the album incorporates influences of rock, Blues, jazz, salsa became a model, characteristic of the early Santana sound, and showed musical development of the band since the release of her first album. This Santana album many consider the best. In 2003 the album was ranked 205th in the list of Rolling Stone magazine's "500 greatest albums of all time". The album reached 7th place in the UK Album Chart.

The cover artwork was painted by Rodney Matthews, the famous English Illustrator in fantasy style, created covers for works by many other artists (Scorpions, Thin Lizzy and others) the Title is borrowed from the novel by Alexander McArthur and Kingsley long's "No Mean City" (1935). With this album the band's sound became heavier, given the addition of guitarist Zal Cleminson of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
