It contained the single "Polk Salad Annie", which has been a staple of live sets by Elvis Presley in 1970-ies. It was recorded at RCA Victor Studios, Nashville and produced by Billy Swan. Lyrics to Polk Salad Annie describe the way of life of a poor southern girl. Traditionally, the term describing the type of food highlighted in the song "poke salad". Its release, 1968, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

He made a bet with Lennon that the song would be able to take first place in the American hit parade (which was previously not possible for any one single solo Lennon). If this would have happened, Lennon was required to attend the Elton John concert. He had to fulfill his promise, because, "Whatever Gets You thru the Night" actually managed to climb to the top of the chart. The song "Beef Jerky" is the only instrumental on solo albums Lennon.
