Unlike the album Surrealistic Pillow, released in the same year earlier, After Bathing at Baxter's has a stronger psychedelic sound and does not contain commercial pop songs like "Somebody to Love" appearing on the second album and a fully formed first. Jefferson Airplane began playing rock much harder than what was played earlier.The album is divided into five parts, includes a few experimental tracks such as the nine-minute instrumental "Spare Chaynge" and the song grace slick "rejoyce", a homage to the James Joyce novel "Ulysses".
