The release of the CD was preceded by the release of several singles — "Big In Japan" in January, Sounds Like A Melody in May and Forever Young in September, just before the release of the record. The album has sold over 2,000,000 copies. The song Forever Young did not initially become a popular hit, but has been considered a classic of the 1980s for some time.

Alan Price said that Lindsay Anderson wanted to make a documentary about Price and his band touring England, but the cost of licensing the songs they performed was too high. While Sherwin and McDowell were developing the script, Anderson decided that Price should write the score, and sent him the script, indicating where he would like to see the songs. Price wrote almost all of the songs before filming began. The soundtrack was released as a vinyl album by Warner Bros. Records, in 1973.
