It was recorded over three weeks in November and December 1978 at ABBAPolar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, and released by the Swan Song label on August 15, 1979. It was the last album released before the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, which led the band to break up. The album was a huge commercial success, especially in the United States, where it reached No. 1 on the Billboard chart in just its second week on the chart. It reached number one in the UK, Canada and New Zealand, and reached the Top 10 or 15 in several other countries. In Through the Out Door was the band's last studio release to reach the top of the charts in America.
