"Walls And Bridges" was recorded during the long absences of Lennon and Yoko Ono. The song "Whatever Gets You thru the Night" was attended by Elton John. He made a bet with Lennon that the song would be able to take first place in the American hit parade (which was previously not possible for any one single solo Lennon). If this would have happened, Lennon was required to attend the Elton John concert. It was adapted from the play "Porgy" by Dorothy Hayward and Dubose Hayward, which is itself an adaptation of the 1925 novel of the same name by Dubose Hayward. Porgy and Bess was first performed in Boston on September 30, 1935, before moving to Broadway in New York.[1] It featured a cast of classically trained African-American singers—a bold artistic choice at the time. After an initially unpopular public reception, the 1976 production of the Houston Grand Opera brought her new popularity, and she is now one of the most famous and frequently performed operas. In 1976, Ray Charles and Cleo Lane recorded an album of excerpts for RCA Victor, in which the two of them performed several roles. The album was arranged and conducted by Frank De Vol. It featured Joe Sample's organ, Harry Edison's trumpet, and guitar work by Joe Pass and Lee Ritenour.
