Swordfishtrombones is the eighth studio album by singer-songwriter Tom Waits, released in 1983 on Island Records. It was the first album that Waits released himself. Stylistically different from his previous albums, Swordfishtrombones moves away from traditional piano songwriting towards unusual instrumentation and a somewhat more abstract and experimental rock approach. The cover is a photo of Michael A. Russavin, in which Waits is depicted with actors Angelo Rossitto and Lee Colima. The album reached number 164 on the Billboard Pop Albums and 200 Albums charts. It was ranked 2nd among the "Albums of the Year" for 1983 by NME In 1989, Spin named Swordfishtrombones the second greatest album of all time. In 2006, Company Q placed the album at number 36 on their list of "The 40 Best Albums of the 80s." Pitchfork listed Swordfishtrombones as the 11th best album of the 1980s. Slant Magazine listed the album ranked 26th on its list of "the best albums of the 1980s".
