Like the band's two previous records, the album was produced by Rick Rubin and released on the major label Warner Bros. Records. Californication marked the return of guitarist John Frusciante, who left the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992 during a tour in support of the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Frusciante officially rejoined the band in 1998, replacing Dave Navarro. In addition to the usual sexual themes for the band, the album touches on topics such as death, suicide, drugs, globalization, as well as travel. The album includes such hits as "Californication", "Around the World", "Otherside", as well as "Scar Tissue", which won a Grammy Award in the category "Best Rock Song". Californication is the band's most commercially successful album.
