The album topped the charts in Belgium and was a great success in the Netherlands, Norway and South Africa.

Some of his songs also take on a more confessional tone, influenced by the loss of two close friends of Madonna due to AIDS. Erotica received generally positive reviews from critics, who considered it one of Madonna's most adventurous albums and praised her comments about taboos and AIDS.
