The CD became the only album recorded by the band after Phil Collins left it in 1996. The lead vocals in this recording were performed by Ray Wilson, who replaced Collins. AllMusic and Rolling Stone noted that Ray Wilson was a worthy replacement for Collins as a vocalist, but the album as a whole lacks good material. The album was released in the USA on June 7, 1976 by Capitol Records (catalog number SKBO 11537), in the UK on June 10, 1976 by Parlophone (catalog number PCSP 719); at that time, some media suggested that the album was released on the twentieth anniversary of the first meeting of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. If this was indeed the intention, then EMI made a mistake in their calculations, since in reality these two first met in July 1957. The album's title, Rock ’n’ Roll Music, is most likely taken from a Chuck Berry song, a version of which performed by The Beatles was included on the second side of the album.
