The album was released in the USA on June 7, 1976 by Capitol Records (catalog number SKBO 11537), in the UK on June 10, 1976 by Parlophone (catalog number PCSP 719); at that time, some media suggested that the album was released on the twentieth anniversary of the first meeting of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. If this was indeed the intention, then EMI made a mistake in their calculations, since in reality these two first met in July 1957. The album's title, Rock ’n’ Roll Music, is most likely taken from a Chuck Berry song, a version of which performed by The Beatles was included on the second side of the album. The album mainly consists of cover versions of songs written by such prominent rock and roll authors and performers of the 1950s as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins and Larry Williams, as well as notable original songs by the Lennon-McCartney duo, such as "Drive My Car", "Revolution", "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Get Back". It was the first album entirely written and produced by the band members. Previously, they relied on the material of the songwriting team of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. The album was released by RCA Records in Europe and Australia and by Capitol Records in the United States, Canada and Japan.  The album completed the band's transition to the hard rock style, which has always been the hallmark of their self-composed B-sides. Give Us a Wink reached 3rd place in Sweden, 9th in Germany and entered the Top 20 in Norway and Australia. The album failed to chart in Sweet's home country, the UK. The European album contains two singles, "Action" and "The Lies in Your Eyes", which were recorded and released before the rest of the album was released. "Action" hit the top 10 in 1975 in many European countries, but stopped at number 15 in the UK singles chart.
