In the United States, the album was released in March 1972 under the title "No Answer" after a United Artists Records employee misunderstood a phone call and asked for the album's name; the caller, unable to contact ELO, wrote "no answer" in his notes, and this was misinterpreted as the album's title. The album is dedicated to the main trio of Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan, who were the remaining members of the rock band The Move. The Move continued to release singles in the UK at the same time that the project was launched, but interest in Wood's former band soon waned.
