The premiere, directed by Mark Zakharov, took place on July 9, 1981 on the stage of the Moscow Lenin Komsomol Theater, where the performance, which has become a kind of business card of Lenkom, took place In parallel with the work on the performance, an audio version of the opera with other performers was recorded in Lenkom in 1980. The first public listening of the recorded work took place on December 9, 1980 in the Church of the Intercession in Fily (Moscow). It was the band's first full-length studio album featuring vocalist Damo Suzuki after Malcolm Mooney's departure a year earlier, although Suzuki participated in recording most of the tracks on the 1970 compilation album Soundtracks. It was recorded at Can Studio [de] in Schloss Nörvenich, a medieval castle near Cologne. Tago Mago includes long experimental tracks that combine rock and jazz improvisation, funk rhythms and specific music using editing techniques.  The album was named Kahn's best and most extreme album in terms of sound and structure.  The album received widespread critical acclaim and influenced many artists.
