Ernie Freeman's arrangement of the title track earned him the Grammy Award for Best Arrangement Accompanied by a Vocalist or Instrumentalist. It was recorded in 1987. The recording took place in the mobile studio "Tonwagen" (Melodiya company) for three days in May 1987 in the village of Shushary near Leningrad. Two sides of the album were named "Red" and "Black". "Block of Hell" was released as a magnetoalbum in 1987, and two years later it was released on vinyl simultaneously with the album "The Sixth Forester". It was released in 1976. This album sounds lighter than previous Caravan releases, it has more short, "pop" songs. The lightness of the sound is partly due to the fact that there is a lot of Pie Hastings in the album. He wrote and performed eight of the nine songs.
