The album is often cited as having a major influence on the development of early metal and heavy metal in particular; in 2002, he took the 10-th position in the rating "100 best rock albums of all time" by the magazine Classic Rock.
Commercially the most successful album by Deep Purple, who led the charts in ten countries, including the UK. The album remained in the top 40 in this country for 20 weeks, and at the top of the Billboard 200 for 118 weeks, reaching the maximum position on the 7 line.
