The record led the band to mainstream success in the US for the first time since Some Great Reward. The album has a less experimental sound, but Alan Wilder paid more attention to arrangements and samples when recording the album. The sound and style on Music for the Masses is significantly different from previous works by Depeche Mode — the songs have a disturbing and melancholic sound.
