Despite the fact that it had only been three years since they released their last album Brand New Day, the band contained a new line-up with David Clayton-Thomas, the only remaining member from that period.

This was the second series of collections of Fitzgerald songs organized by Riddle; their previous joint project was her book of George and Ira Gershwin songs in 1959. In France, Scène de vie climbed to number 2 on May 10, 1990, and then reached the top of the album chart and stayed there for ten weeks. It spent 38 weeks in the top ten and 78 weeks in the top 50.[3] It became a diamond disc eight years after its release, just as Mademoiselle Chante did... before him.
