It was the first album that Waits released himself. Stylistically different from his previous albums, Swordfishtrombones moves away from traditional piano songwriting towards unusual instrumentation and a somewhat more abstract and experimental rock approach. The cover is a photo of Michael A. Russavin, in which Waits is depicted with actors Angelo Rossitto and Lee Colima. The album reached number 164 on the Billboard Pop Albums and 200 Albums charts.
