After the release of the album , critics wrote: There is a clear discrepancy between the sheer ambition of this CD and its rather modest status in Santana's discography. The reason, obviously, is that the powerful swing did not quite succeed. We can say that this album is a continuation of the storyline started on Love, Devotion, Surrender with John McLaughlin. Here we are again witnessing a mighty spiritual message and free jazz arrivals. Here, Santana's partner is Alice Coltrane, the widow of the famous jazz musician. It is important that she is not only a widow, but also a harpist (almost the only one in jazz), as well as a pianist and string arranger. The presence of double bassist Dave Holland is also pleasing. The swing here is obvious: a bold attempt to mix classical, jazz and ethnic rhythms together - that is, to make a universal, comprehensive album.
