The Beatles (also known as The White Album) is the tenth studio album by The Beatles and the band's only double release. The album, released in 1968, is better known as the "White Album" because of its white cover, which contains nothing but the band's name (the early editions also feature a serial number), and which was designed by artist Richard Hamilton as an antithesis to the mottled image of its predecessor. The White Album was the first album The Beatles recorded and released after the death of the band's manager, Brian Epstein. It was originally planned to be called A Doll's House ("Doll's House"), but due to the release of a longplay by the band Family with a similar name, Music in a Doll's House ("Music in a doll's House"), it was decided to rename it . The album reached number 1 in the UK and US charts and is now considered one of the greatest albums of all time and a masterpiece of rock music. Weekly's "20 Greatest Double Albums", the same place in the NME's "30 Must-Listen Double Albums" list, and the top spot in The Daily Telegraph's "10 Greatest Double Albums in History".
