It was recorded at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland, and at the Power Station in New York City from September to November 1986. The album was produced by Bowie together with David Richards, and also with the participation of Peter Frampton on guitar. Musically, Never Let Me Down was characterized as pop rock, art rock and hard rock; Bowie himself considered this album a return to rock and roll. The cover depicts Bowie surrounded by numerous elements from the songs. Never Let Me Down was a commercial success, peaking at number 6 in the UK. Procol's Ninth Rare British original is the eighth studio album (ninth, including live) Procol Harum, released in August 1975. Produced by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Procol's Ninth album was slightly different from the previous album, with a much brighter sound than Chris Thomas' more elaborate works. According to an interview with guitarist Mick Grabham, taken by Roland Clare for the 2009 reissue, Leiber and Stoller paid less attention to the producer sound, and more to the "structure of the songs".
