Recorded in January 1970, it became a groundbreaking work in the emerging genre of jazz-rock fusion. The concert was filmed as a TV movie, and also released in September 1990 as a live album. The concert took place in the presence of a 200,000-strong audience on July 21, 1990 at Potsdamer Platz, which was previously a no-man's land separating East and West Berlin.
