The album is dedicated to Roger Waters' father who died in World War II. The Final Cut was released in the UK on March 21, 1983, and in the US on April 2, it reached number one in the UK, surpassing The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. It was less successful in America, peaking at number six on the Billboard album charts. With over 1,000,000 units shipped in the United States, the Recording Industry Association of America certified Final Cut Platinum in May 1983. In 1997, he received a double platinum certification.
