BIG HITS vol.2 (THROUGH THE PAST, DARKLY) is the second compilation album by the English rock band the Rolling Stones, released in September 1969 by Decca Records in the UK and London Records/ABKCO Records in the USA. The UK track listing included the more obscure "You Better Move On" from The Rolling Stones' 1964 self-titled debut EP and "Sittin' on a Fence", an excerpt from Aftermath originally released in 1967 on the American Flowers album. In addition to these songs, many tracks, especially those released for only one album, were first collected on the British Rolling Stones album. Released on September 12, 1969, both versions Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits, VOL. 2 ) turned out to be popular releases, taking 2nd place in the UK and USA according to sales results. ...more

Recorded between September 1970 and June 1971, it was released in September 1971 on the Harvest Records label. The album was recorded at De Lane Lea Studios (like its predecessor). Compared to Deep Purple in Rock, this album was recorded in a more experimental style. Allmusic named it one of the band's four most important albums, along with Machine Head, In Rock and Burn. Ian Gillan, unlike the rest of the band, considers this album a classic of Deep Purple. However, he noted that the inclusion of "Anyone's Daughter" on the album (in a country style and with humorous lyrics) was fun, but a mistake ("A good bit of fun, but a mistake"). Jon Lord highlighted several tracks on the album, such as "No No No" and "Fools", and especially noted Pace's playing in the title track. The track "Strange Kind of Woman", released as a single in February 1971 and rose to number eight in the UK charts. 20,000 copies were sold in the first week.
