It is a concept album that is a satirical assessment of the music industry, including song publishers, trade unions, the press, accountants, business managers and life on tour. This marked the expansion of the band to five members with the addition of keyboardist John Gosling. Despite the fact that the album Lola Versus Powerman was released during a transitional period for The Kinks, it was a success with both critics and the public, hitting the top 40 in America and bringing the band back into the public eye, becoming a "comeback".
