It was Fitzgerald's first album for the newly formed Verve Records (and the first album released by the label). Fitzgerald's time on the Verve label allowed her to release her most famous recordings at the peak of her vocal abilities. This album marked the beginning of a series of Fitzgerald songs, each of the eight albums in the series focuses on a different composer's canon, known as the Great American Songbook. The album was recorded on February 7-9 and March 27, 1956 in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Fitzgerald's manager and producer of many of her albums, Norman Granz, visited Cole Porter at the Waldorf-Astoria and played him the entire album. Afterwards, Porter simply remarked: "God, what a wonderful diction this girl has."
