CHARLES, RAY/ CLEO LAINE-PORGY AND BESS-1976-FIRST PRESS UK-LONDON-D31D2 Rare British original of the legend of the jazz scene. Porgy and Bess is an English-language opera by American composer George Gershwin, whose libretto was written by author Dubose Hayward and lyricist Ira Gershwin. It was adapted from the play "Porgy" by Dorothy Hayward and Dubose Hayward, which is itself an adaptation of the 1925 novel of the same name by Dubose Hayward. Porgy and Bess was first performed in Boston on September 30, 1935, before moving to Broadway in New York.[1] It featured a cast of classically trained African-American singers—a bold artistic choice at the time. After an initially unpopular public reception, the 1976 production of the Houston Grand Opera brought her new popularity, and she is now one of the most famous and frequently performed operas. In 1976, Ray Charles and Cleo Lane recorded an album of excerpts for RCA Victor, in which the two of them performed several roles. The album was arranged and conducted by Frank De Vol. It featured Joe Sample's organ, Harry Edison's trumpet, and guitar work by Joe Pass and Lee Ritenour. The title track is one of the longest songs sung in Russian. One of the tribute albums to the memory of Mike and the band, released in 2005, was called "County Town N 20 years later". The album was recorded in the spring of 1983 on equipment in the building of the "House of the Young Technician" in Leningrad under the direction of Andrey Tropillo. A tape recorder of the Studer brand at the 38th speed and a Basf LR-56 film were used. Produced by Flood, Brian Inoi and The Edge, it was released on July 5, 1993 on Island Records. Zooropa received generally positive reviews from critics. Despite the fact that none of his three singles—"Numb", "Lemon" and "Stay (Far, so Close!)"—was a consistent hit in different regions, the record sold well after release, entering the top ten out of 26 countries.
