It was the first album that Waits released himself. Stylistically different from his previous albums, Swordfishtrombones moves away from traditional piano songwriting towards unusual instrumentation and a somewhat more abstract and experimental rock approach. The cover is a photo of Michael A. Russavin, in which Waits is depicted with actors Angelo Rossitto and Lee Colima. The album reached number 164 on the Billboard Pop Albums and 200 Albums charts. The album was released on March 22, 1993 on the Mute Records label, and a day later in the United States on the Sire and Reprise Records labels. The album contains a darker and darker sound than its predecessor Violator, largely influenced by the alternative and grunge scene in the US. Songs of Faith and Devotion reached high positions in most country charts and also became the first Depeche Mode album to debut on the chart in both the UK and the US.
