It was originally released by Mercury Records in the United States on November 4, 1970 and in the United Kingdom on April 10, 1971. The album was produced by Tony Visconti and recorded at Trident and Advision Studios in London in April and May 1970. The album was initially a commercial failure. Pegg writes that by the end of June 1971, only 1,395 copies had been sold in the United States.. That same year, Bowie stated, "[he] sold like hot cakes in Beckenham and nowhere else."However, after the 1972 RCA reissue following Ziggy Stardust's commercial breakthrough, the album peaked at No. 24 in the UK, where it remained for 30 weeks, and number 105 on the Best Records charts, for as long as 23 weeks, the 1990 reissue of the album re-entered the UK album charts, peaking at number 66.
