The album was released in the USA on June 7, 1976 by Capitol Records (catalog number SKBO 11537), in the UK on June 10, 1976 by Parlophone (catalog number PCSP 719); at that time, some media suggested that the album was released on the twentieth anniversary of the first meeting of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. If this was indeed the intention, then EMI made a mistake in their calculations, since in reality these two first met in July 1957. The album's title, Rock ’n’ Roll Music, is most likely taken from a Chuck Berry song, a version of which performed by The Beatles was included on the second side of the album. The album mainly consists of cover versions of songs written by such prominent rock and roll authors and performers of the 1950s as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins and Larry Williams, as well as notable original songs by the Lennon-McCartney duo, such as "Drive My Car", "Revolution", "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Get Back". Emilio Estevez asked Bon Jovi for their song "Wanted Dead or Alive" from the album "Slippery When Wet" as the theme for his upcoming sequel film about Billy the Kid, but instead Jon Bon Jovi composed several songs for this film. The recording of the album was attended by such stars as Elton John, Little Richard and Jeff Beck. The title song of this album — "Blaze of Glory" — was nominated in 1991 for the Academy Award in the category "Best Music for a Film".
