Cucumber Castle is the only Bee Gees album recorded without Robin Gibb. The singer left the band at that time for a solo career and did not take part in the work on the record. His voice can be heard in several songs, but he is not even mentioned in the credits. Instead, some vocal parts are performed by the British soul singer P. P. Arnold. Like the previous Grand Funk Railroad albums, it was recorded at the Cleveland Recording Company and is the last album produced by Terry Knight. The name is a play on the motto of the United States of America, E pluribus unum, and in Latin means "Of many, Funk". The original exhaust cap (designed by Ernie Cefalu) was completely round and covered with a silver film resembling a large coin. The back cover of this album included a cast image of Shea Stadium.
