The first half of the original LP (tracks 1 to 5) is a conceptual story about the wizard Merlin. The second half of the LP is a collection of individual songs. The album received very high marks, and many call it the best album of the band's creativity. In 2003, KAYAK released a revised and longer version of Merlin's story called Merlin - Bard of the Unseen.

The name is a play on the motto of the United States of America, E pluribus unum, and in Latin means "Of many, Funk".
