According to the RIAA, it sold over five million copies in the U.S. alone, becoming instantly multiplatinovymi. The first four tracks previously released on the EP Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide. The last four songs were recorded using acoustic guitars. They were written and recorded in only a few sessions in the Studio (except "You're Crazy", which was included in an alternate version of the album Appetite for Destruction).In later interviews, Axl rose said that he likes how the band sounded on the last four songs, but he hated the sound of his voice. Rose recalled that his voice was hoarse and rough due to long touring bands at the time, and if he could, he re-recorded his vocals. "You're Crazy" was released previously on the band's debut album, Appetite for Destruction and in this album as originally conceived.

All tracks on this album belong to the band members, except for a cover version of "Well All Right" from the Buddy Holly repertoire. The album received positive reviews from critics, was a great commercial success and immediately topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
