Band leader Ian Carr (later a jazz journalist and published expert on Miles Davis) was probably inspired by Davis' "going electric" in 1969, but the original song Bitches Brew had not yet been released at the time of Elastic Rock recording, and according to Carr, they had not even heard Davis' 1969 electric release. less influenced by rock, In a Silent Way. In July 1970, the band presented compositions from the LP at the Montreux Jazz Festival, receiving the first prize. Subsequently, they performed both at the Newport Jazz Festival and at the Village Gate Jazz Club.
