It was recorded at Guillaume Tell Studio in Paris, produced by Chris Thomas, and its cover was designed by Gianni Versace. The album held the 2nd place for three weeks in a row, not reaching the 1st place in the UK, being removed from the first line by Lionel Richie's compilation Back to Front. However, it was John's best-selling album in the United States since 1976, and it was certified 2× platinum in that country by the RIAA. It is also John's only studio album to reach number one in Germany.

The Wall: Live in Berlin is a concert performance of the legendary rock opera The Wall by Pink Floyd, organized by its main author Roger Waters and held on July 21, 1990 at Berlin's Potsdamer Platz, which has long been divided by the Berlin Wall. The concert was filmed as a TV movie, and also released in September 1990 as a live album. The concert took place in the presence of a 200,000-strong audience on July 21, 1990 at Potsdamer Platz, which was previously a no-man's land separating East and West Berlin. During the concert, a "wall" with a width of more than 160 m and a height of about 25 m was erected on the stage, which was finally destroyed to the ground.
