"From the very beginning of this project, around January 1991, right after the Manic Nirvana tour, I knew what I was going to do: go back in time, listen to [Moby] Grape, [Jefferson] Airplane, Tim Hardin, Quicksilver, Traffic and other rock musicians. These people were trying to tell the listener something by joining various traditions, with the understanding that the search was planned and intertwined in their acoustic and electronic themes. I'm also proud that I tried to make the album lyrical by trying to tell vivid stories that come from heartfelt traditional prose."Robert Plant. The Fate Of Nations album appeared by mid-1993. This album features not only Plant's regular band, but also many guest musicians such as Maire Brennan, Nigel Kennedy and Richard Thompson. Guitarist Kevin Scott MacMichael also contributed significantly to the album. Fate Of Nations has incorporated a variety of styles and influences, some of which come from Led Zeppelin. Two songs from the album were released as singles (29 Palms and If I Were A Carpenter), followed by a world tour that ended in South America in early 1994.

Originally released on January 30, 1984 in Europe by the Liberty/EMI label, it was redesigned for the American market and released on April 16, 1984 in North America by the Geffen label. A "European" mix was released in Japan on March 23, 1984, and an "American" remix from CBS/Sony was released on December 21, 1984.
