It was released by Columbia Records on August 31, 1993. The album consists of ballads written mainly by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, with whom she previously worked on Emotions (1991), as well as several dance tracks. While working on the album, Carey wanted to expand her audience by choosing a more pop-oriented/RB-oriented sound. Ahead of the release, the band posted a full-page advertisement in Melody Maker magazine at the end of September saying, "Thank you for making us the number one band in the world."  The album was released in the US on October 5, and in the UK on October 23.
