This is their first studio album since the departure of lead vocalist and lyricist Robert Calvert, and the lyrics here are usually superficial, and the number of instrumental parts is increased. The album was released in 1966 by Parlophone in the UK and Australia, in both mono and stereo versions. By the pre-Christmas season of 1966, the EMI label had no new musical material from The Beatles for the first time in three years. The compilation was an alternative suitable to meet EMI's demand for new products, as the band had just begun recording Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the follow-up to their album Revolver, released in the summer. It was the first official compilation of the band's greatest hits, although the Beatles did not participate in the creation of the album. The album peaked at number six on the UK Albums Chart.
