Voyage debuted at the top of the charts in Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It also became the band's most popular studio album in Canada and the United States (as well as their first album to reach the top ten in the latter country), debuting at number two on the charts of both countries. It is based on T. S. Eliot's 1939 collection of poems, The Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellykles and the night they make the "Jellykles choice", deciding which cat will rise to the Heaviside layer and return to a new life. As of 2024, "Cats" remains the fifth longest-running Broadway show and the eighth longest-running show in the West End. Lloyd Webber began writing music based on Eliot's poems in 1977, and in 1980 these compositions were first presented as a song cycle. Then producer Cameron Mackintosh invited director Trevor Nunn and choreographer Gillian Lynn to turn the songs into a full-fledged musical. "Cats" received positive reviews at the New London Theatre in the West End in 1981, followed by mixed reviews at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway in 1982.
