ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER- CATS (2LP'S)-1981-THE FIRST UK PRESS-POLYDOR-CATX001. A very rare British original of a cult rock opera. "Cats" is a musical musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is based on T. S. Eliot's 1939 collection of poems, The Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellykles and the night they make the "Jellykles choice", deciding which cat will rise to the Heaviside layer and return to a new life. As of 2024, "Cats" remains the fifth longest-running Broadway show and the eighth longest-running show in the West End. Lloyd Webber began writing music based on Eliot's poems in 1977, and in 1980 these compositions were first presented as a song cycle. Then producer Cameron Mackintosh invited director Trevor Nunn and choreographer Gillian Lynn to turn the songs into a full-fledged musical. "Cats" received positive reviews at the New London Theatre in the West End in 1981, followed by mixed reviews at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway in 1982. They have won numerous awards, including the Laurence Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Musical. Despite the unusual idea, which initially scared off investors, the musical was an unprecedented commercial success: by 2012, its box office worldwide totaled 3.5 billion US dollars. ...more

Lot 52.DEEP PURPLE-IN ROCK-1970-FIRST PRESS UK-HARVEST-NMINT/NMINT

DEEP PURPLE-IN ROCK-1970- THE FIRST UK PRESS-HARVEST- SHVL777. Matrices A-2/B-1.  Deep Purple in Rock is the fourth studio album by the British rock band Deep Purple, released on June 5, 1970 on Harvest Records. This is the first studio album recorded with the classic band line-up called "Mark II" (a little earlier, this line-up recorded the live album Concerto for Group and Orchestra). Since this album, the band's style has changed dramatically. Deep Purple started playing hard rock almost simultaneously with such bands as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, and are considered one of the founders and classics of this genre. According to the music critic, "the record became the epicenter of destruction, a fresh stream in the rock of the 1970s and a turn in history, in which the roots of the heavy metal style were laid." Deep Purple in Rock became the band's breakthrough album in Europe and reached number four on the UK national charts, remaining on the charts for over a year. His accompanying single "Black Night" reached the 2nd line. It has been included in various lists of the best albums, including Classic Rock magazine's list of the "100 Greatest British Albums of All Time" and Q magazine's list of the "50 Best Albums of the 70s." In 2015, the American website Ultimate Classic Rock ranked the album at the top of its ranking of Deep Purple's best works. Certified as a gold disc in the UK, USA, France, the Netherlands and Argentina. ...more

JOHN, ELTON-CARIBOU-1974-FIRST PRESS UK-DJM-DJLPH439. A rare British original of the master of the British stage. Caribou is the eighth studio album by Elton John, released in 1974. The album peaked at number four in the US and number three in the UK. The album contains the singles "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", which peaked at number 16 on the UK Singles chart and number two in the US, and "The Bitch Is Back", which peaked at number 15 in the UK and number four in the US. Both singles reached number one in Canada on the national RPM 100 Top Singles Chart, as did the album itself. The album was met with lukewarm reviews on its release, and legacy reviews do not consider this record one of John's best works from his peak period of the early 1970s. However, the album was a commercial success and was certified double platinum in the US, as well as being certified gold in the UK.
