DEEP PURPLE-SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE-1968-FIRST PRESS USA-TETRAGRAMMATON- T-102, Shades of Deep Purple is the debut album by the English rock band Deep Purple, released in July 1968 on the Tetragrammaton label in the USA and in September 1968 on the Parlophone label in the UK. The band, originally called Roundabout, was the idea of former Seahawks drummer Chris Curtis, who invited Jon Lord and Richie Blackmore to join the band before leaving the project. In March 1968, the band was joined by vocalist and frontman Rod Evans, as well as bassist Nick Simper and drummer Ian Pace. After two months of rehearsals, Shades of Deep Purple was recorded in just three days in May 1968. It contains four original songs and four cover versions, carefully arranged with classical interludes added to make the sound more psychedelic. Stylistically, the music is close to psychedelic rock and progressive rock, two genres whose audience was constantly growing in the late 1960s. The album was not widely recognized in the UK, where very few copies were sold and it did not chart. On the other hand, he was a success in the US, and the single "Hush", an energetic rock track written by Joe South and originally recorded by Billy Joe Royal, became very popular at the time and reached number 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. ...more

A rare American original by an iconic saxophonist. Reel Life is an album by jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, released on the Milestone label in 1982. It includes performances by Rollins with Bobby Broome, Yoshiaki Masuo, Bob Crenshaw and Jack DeJohnette. In the Allmusic review by Michael J. Nastosa says: "As Rollins' career gained momentum, his love of hard bop, Caribbean music, and funk styles continued to attract loyal fans and urban audiences. Rollins, who has an incomparably melodious tenor saxophone, continued in the same spirit." ...more

Aftermath is the fourth British and sixth American studio album by the British rock band The Rolling Stones, released in two versions. The British version of the record (Decca Records) was released on April 15, 1966, intended for sale in the United States (London Records) on June 20. The CD is designed in the classic rhythm and blues style for the band, but it has become more "experimental" than its predecessors; for example, in a number of songs such non-standard instruments for rock music as sitar, accordion and marimba (African xylophone) are used. A rare British original by a cult prog band. Levitation is the tenth studio album by the English rock band Hawkwind, released in 1980. It reached number 21 on the UK Albums Chart. During the album's release, bandleader Dave Brock stated, "With Levitation, we returned to the style of our debut album. And it was a record that fully expressed our ideals and what we fought for."  This is their first studio album since the departure of lead vocalist and lyricist Robert Calvert, and the lyrics here are usually superficial, and the number of instrumental parts is increased. It is also Hawkwind's only studio album to feature former Cream drummer Ginger Baker, and the first for former Gong keyboardist Tim Blake, who later rejoined the band and played on the 2010 album Blood of the Earth. ...more
