The overall tone of the album's lyrics was less dependent on words than in Construction Time Again, with the exception of the hit "People Are People", which condemned racism. However, with its reflections on the world and life, Some Great Reward still became a more romantic and introspective album.

This was to ensure that the album was properly promoted, not that it was "lost" during the shift, and although this was unpleasant for them, the band members supported it.
