In Australia, the album was called "The Band Played Boogie". The album includes, in particular, covers of songs by The Kinks and Cream, and it is equally divided by original compositions. The style continues the style of their two previous albums, with heavy rock and blues songs arranged on jazz instruments. The album contains a darker and darker sound than its predecessor Violator, largely influenced by the alternative and grunge scene in the US. Songs of Faith and Devotion reached high positions in most country charts and also became the first Depeche Mode album to debut on the chart in both the UK and the US. Sweet Fanny Adams reached number 27 on the UK Albums chart in the year of its release by RCA Records in 1974 and number 2 on the West German Albums chart.
