A New World Record is the sixth studio album by the British band Electric Light Orchestra, released in September 1976. The album was remastered and re-released in 2006 with the addition of six bonus tracks. A New World Record became the band's first album to reach the top ten in the UK (the previous three albums had great success in the USA, but not in the homeland of the musicians). The album was certified platinum in both the UK and the USA, and sold five million copies in the first year after its release. Like the previous album, A New World Record was recorded at Munich's Musicland Studios.

The Captain and the Kid tells about the events in their lives over the past three decades. The Captain and the Kid reached number 6 on the UK Albums Chart, which was a significant improvement over John's previous album Peachtree Road in 2004, which reached number 21. Captain reached number 18 on the US Billboard 200, but quickly dropped off the charts. At concerts in early 2007, John made it clear that he was unhappy with the promotion of the album by Interscope Records, and threatened to terminate the contract with the label.
