The title of the album is taken from Fred Zinnerman's feature film "The Day of the Jackal", released in 1973. Allmusic fully praised the album in their retrospective review, praising Rick Davis' keyboard work, Roger Hodgson's vocals, and John Helliwell's saxophone.
