Bassist Gary Thane left by mutual consent, because due to drug addiction he was physically unable to cope with a tight schedule of touring and recording. Fat Mattress is the self—titled debut studio album by the English rock band Fat Mattress, released on August 15, 1969. Fat Mattress was founded in late 1968 by vocalist Neil Landon and guitarist and vocalist Noel Redding, who at that time was playing bass guitar in the popular psychedelic rock band The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Landon and Redding had already written several songs for Landon's cancelled solo project and, having invited bassist Jim Leverton and drummer Eric Dillon, completed the writing and began recording their first material. The self-titled debut album was completed the following year and released in the UK by Polydor Records on August 15, and in the US by Atco Records in October. In support of the album, the band also released their debut single "Magic Forest", which reached number 11 in the Netherlands.
